What is hearing screening?

Patient's question:

When my son was 42 days old, because we arrived at the hospital a bit late, the doctor who was supposed to conduct the hearing screening had already left, so he didn't get it done. Moreover, the doctor didn't even mention that a hearing screening was supposed to be performed at that time. However, they said that if the doctor came back, they would notify us. But they never did.
Eight months later, at the First People's Hospital, we found out that my son had congenital deafness.
What kind of compensation can we demand from this hospital?

Doctor's answer:

Currently, the Ministry of Health mandates that newborn hearing screening be conducted within 2 to 7 days. For babies born in hospitals, the screening is usually performed within 72 hours after birth to promptly detect hearing impairments in newborns. If a newborn's hearing screening fails, another test can be administered before discharge. If it still fails, a follow-up screening is required, which involves taking the baby to the hospital for a recheck at 42 days of age. The hearing screening instruments used in China mainly include Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) and Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE). The screening results are expressed as either "passed" or "failed."
