Can infantile spasms be treated?

Patient's question:

The baby was diagnosed with infantile spasms this year. I am very worried and sad. Can infantile spasms be cured?

Doctor's answer:

Infantile spasms are actually a special type of epilepsy in infancy, most commonly occurring in infants aged 3-7 months. The etiology may be related to birth injury, neonatal respiratory distress, viral encephalitis, intrauterine infection, congenital toxoplasmosis, congenital brain malformations, and many metabolic diseases. Infantile spasms cause severe pain, in addition to generalized convulsions, as they may also lead to mental disorders in children. Immediate treatment is required. Early treatment initiation can reduce the severity of brain damage. Less than 90% of children develop mental and motor disorders or degenerative changes after onset. Antiepileptic treatment generally requires long-term medication for 2-4 years, and the side effects of Western medicine may interfere with the intellectual and developmental growth of children.
