Features: This book is Volume of the College English Extensive Reading Coursebook, designed for first-year college English students. The book contains thirty lessons, which can be divided into ten units, with three passages per unit. All the passages are selected from original English and American works and have been slightly edited. The selection criteria for extensive reading passages aim to ensure novelty, a wide range of topics, diverse styles, a balance between knowledge and (interest), and appropriate difficulty control to facilitate smooth reading. During the revision, the editors took the following measures into consideration for the convenience of readers:
1. Added Words to Know in each revision, listing commonly used vocabulary to remove reading obstacles. A few passages also include Words to Look Up in the Dictionary, listing two or three words to help students develop the ability to choose the correct meanings.
2. Added Introductions before each passage, written in italics to distinguish them from the main text. The purpose of the Introductions is to enhance reading interest and guide students to approach the text with questions.
3. Converted annotations to footnotes to save time and facilitate easy reference. The annotations mainly provide concise English explanations for linguistic difficulties or complex sentences to assist students in smooth reading. For a few annotations that are difficult to explain in English, Chinese explanations are used.
4. Added Useful Phrases and Expressions after each passage to help students master and memorize them.
5. Improved the format and content of the exercises after each passage. Exercise types include true-or-false judgments, multiple-choice questions, phrase or sentence translation, and thought-provoking questions. The exercises are designed to complement intensive reading and gradually develop students' abilities to analyze, summarize, synthesize, and infer during the reading process.
6. Retained a Master Vocabulary List at the end of each book, primarily for students to refer to and memorize.
