Features: College English is a series of textbooks compiled based on the College English Teaching Syllabus (Undergraduate Arts and Science) approved by the State Education Commission. It includes five types of teaching materials: intensive reading, extensive reading, listening, fast reading, grammar, and exercises. The trial edition was published in 1986, and the official edition in 1992.
The intensive reading, extensive reading, fast reading, and listening teaching materials are each compiled in six levels, with one book per level, for use in levels 1 to 6; the grammar and exercises are compiled in four levels, for use in levels 1 to 4. Both the intensive reading and listening teaching materials are equipped with teacher's books and audio cassettes, and the extensive reading teaching materials for levels 1 to 6 also come with teacher's books. For students who do not meet the enrollment requirements stipulated by the syllabus, two sets of preparatory intensive reading and extensive reading teaching materials are separately compiled. The entire series was written by six universities: Fudan University, Peking University, East China Normal University, Renmin University of China, Wuhan University, and Nanjing University, with Dong Yafen of Fudan University serving as the chief editor. All members of the former College Foreign Language Textbook Editorial Committee's comprehensive college English editorial team have been closely involved in the design and compilation of this series from the beginning.
This revision was carried out based on extensive feedback from teachers across the country using this series of textbooks, as well as opinions gathered from tens of thousands of teachers and students through questionnaires. The Comprehensive College Foreign Language Teaching Guidance Committee's College English Group provided multi-faceted guidance and support for this revision. The purpose of the revision is to "face the 21st century and elevate college English teaching to a new level." During the revision, the texts were appropriately adjusted according to the specific requirements of each teaching material, increasing the coverage of vocabulary stipulated by the syllabus and the frequency of common words. The exercises were further improved to emphasize the practice of key vocabulary. At the same time, the horizontal connections between the various teaching materials were strengthened, ensuring that each is both self-contained and complementary, forming a cohesive whole. The revised edition pays greater attention to its applicability across disciplines such as arts, sciences, engineering, agriculture, and medicine, striving to give students a "broad, deep, and solid" language foundation.
