What is Down syndrome?

Patient's question:

I have been actively trying to conceive recently and plan to have a healthy baby next year. Recently, I came across a book that mentioned Down syndrome. What is Down syndrome? Can this condition be treated? Can it be detected during prenatal tests?

Doctor's answer:

Down syndrome, also known as congenital idiocy, is caused by abnormalities in chromosome 21. Babies with this condition experience delays in intellectual and developmental growth, and they cannot surpass normal levels through rehabilitation training or other methods. Detailed examinations can be conducted during pregnancy. At 11-14 weeks of gestation, an ultrasound can be performed to check the NT value. Between 15 and 20 weeks of pregnancy, blood tests can be done for the T screening test. If the risk is high, further prenatal diagnosis is required.
