Can glaucoma be detected in its early stages?

Patient's question:

The elderly person at home is getting older, and their eyesight is getting worse. Recently, they mentioned seeing small black spots in their vision. I'm not sure if it's glaucoma, and I want to take them for a thorough examination. Can a detailed check-up be done early in the morning?

Doctor's answer:

Glaucoma is essentially a group of diseases that affect the optic nerve, with elevated intraocular pressure being one of its main risk factors. Many types of glaucoma do not have obvious symptoms, making early detection difficult. Symptoms can be used for speculation. Nausea and vomiting caused by gastrointestinal diseases are very common and can usually be relieved only after taking anti-nausea and pain-relieving medication. However, during a recurrence of glaucoma, nausea and vomiting can only be alleviated or completely eliminated when the intraocular pressure drops. When a patient is sick, there are rainbow-colored rings around the light. The outer ring is red, and the inner ring is green or purple. This is due to elevated intraocular pressure, disrupted aqueous humor circulation, corneal edema, and resulting changes in refraction. When the intraocular pressure returns to normal, the rainbow vision disappears.
