Features: The purpose of the course "History of Chinese Cinema" is to introduce students studying film production to major artistic movements and trends, important film artists, and representative works from different periods, in order to help them understand the historical development and excellent traditions of Chinese cinema. To meet the needs of teaching, we base our introduction on existing film materials in the curriculum, focusing on the historical development of Chinese cinema from the perspective of artistic evolution. We hope this knowledge will help students better inherit and promote the valuable experience of China's national film tradition in their future creations, and drive the continuous development of Chinese cinema.
Film is a young art. In the late 19th century, as world literature and arts transitioned from the classical period to the modern era, film was just born. In China, when modern literature began to flourish after the May Fourth Movement, Chinese cinema started producing narrative films. In both content and form, it had not yet escaped its primitive state. In just a few decades, it has been striving to keep pace with modern arts and is gradually moving toward maturity. This makes it impossible to directly apply traditional historical and literary periodization methods to narrate the history of film. Instead, we must try to find a method that better reflects the development path of Chinese cinema.
