Features: Since the 1980s, with the prominence of globalization and regionalization trends in the world economy, regional economic research has become an important and popular topic, yielding some results. However, most studies have remained at the macro level, focusing on larger regional economies such as eastern, central, and western economies, or mountainous economies, while neglecting consideration of local and personalized aspects of regional economic development at the micro level. (Shanzhai) is a special type of region. The Shanzhai economy is a significant component of multi-level regional economies. However, the development of the Shanzhai economy has long been overlooked. Three years ago, the author began researching this topic. This project was funded by the Hunan Provincial Natural Science Foundation and the Provincial Education Department. Four papers from the research findings were fully reproduced in the journal Agricultural Economy Guide by the Renmin University of China, and two were excerpted in New China Digest. As a result, the study of Shanzhai economic development has attracted academic attention. This paper takes the economic development of the Wuling Mountains as a case study, aiming to explore the path of Shanzhai economic development in typical environments through the study of commodity production and business activities such as planting, animal husbandry, processing, and services conducted by farmers living in Shanzhai areas, using their unique natural conditions and resources. The goal is to provide a typical example for the development of Shanzhai economies in similar environments and to construct a general theoretical framework for Shanzhai economic development. This is undoubtedly of great significance for promoting the overall development of China's Shanzhai economy, increasing income, improving quality of life, and enhancing the ecological environment, thereby fostering the coordinated development of regional economies. The author believes that the Shanzhai economy is distinct from both mountainous area development and mountainous economies, as well as ethnic economies. To study the development of the Shanzhai economy, it is essential to grasp its fundamental conditions and characteristics. The ecological factors cluster, cultural factors cluster, and socio-economic factors cluster, shaped by special geographical locations, natural environments, and resource endowments, form the basic material carrying conditions influencing Shanzhai economic development. Specifically, the development of the Shanzhai economy is affected by natural factors such as regional climate conditions, natural resources, and geographical locations, as well as economic factors like the existing level of economic development, current productivity, and infrastructure. Additionally, it is influenced by social factors such as population size, population density, ethnicity, culture, and environmental protection. These factors give the Shanzhai economy characteristics such as ethnic identity, (closed nature), backwardness, and ecological fragility. The ideal path for Shanzhai economic development is to update concepts, develop specialized economies, engage in inter-regional cooperation, increase investment efficiency, promote science and education, and expand markets. To achieve effective development, it is necessary to address issues such as the development of advantageous resources, ecological environmental protection, the utilization of human resources, and market-oriented development. The study finds that institutional gaps significantly constrain the development of the Shanzhai economy, hence proposing that the development of the Shanzhai economy must adhere to principles of keeping pace with the times, being pragmatic, and innovating. Additionally, this paper explores issues such as the distinctive development, sustainable development, and comprehensive development of the Shanzhai economy, and proposes views and measures for its comprehensive development, including "developing the Shanzhai economy beyond the Shanzhai." The research is divided into ten chapters. Chapter 1: Introduction focuses on analyzing the conditions and characteristics of Shanzhai economic development, using the current state of economic development in the Wuling Mountains as an example. It highlights regional economic disparities and coordinated development challenges in China's regional economy, advocating for greater attention to the development of the Shanzhai economy and explaining its significant importance. Chapter 2 discusses the formation and development of the Shanzhai economy, providing a comprehensive evaluation and analyzing its advantages and constraints. Chapter 3 examines the issues to be addressed in choosing the development path of the Shanzhai economy, exploring the principles for path selection and proposing a development path. Chapter 4 elaborates on the connotation and significance of market-oriented development in the Shanzhai economy and proposes ways to achieve it. Chapter 5 presents a vision for the distinctive development of the Shanzhai economy. Chapter 6 analyzes the comprehensive development of the Shanzhai economy, proposing the view and specific measures of "developing the Shanzhai economy beyond the Shanzhai." Chapter 7 examines the construction of sustainable development for the Shanzhai economy. Chapter 8 analyzes the constraints of institutional gaps on Shanzhai economic development, proposing principles for institutional innovation and summarizing successful experiences in promoting development through institutional innovation, as well as outlining ideas for institutional innovation in the Shanzhai economy. Chapter 9 conducts an empirical study of the Shanzhai economy. Chapter 10 summarizes the conclusions drawn from the research on Shanzhai economic development. This paper, while ensuring a novel topic and scientifically rational system, also innovates in research perspectives and argumentation methods, primarily in the following aspects: First, studying the Shanzhai economy at the micro level as a special regional economy, proposing targeted and actionable development strategies, and enriching theories of regional economic development. Most studies on regional economies focus on macro-level discussions of larger regional economies. Due to the relatively large scale of these regions, the policies proposed are often difficult to implement in practice. The Shanzhai is a special economic region belonging to the micro geographical level. While considering the locality and uniqueness of Shanzhai economic development, this paper emphasizes revealing its commonalities and strengthening the operability of strategies. Second, based on the significant role of institutional factors in development, the author incorporates institutional innovation into the field of promoting Shanzhai economic development. Combining the characteristics of Shanzhai economic development, exploratory principles and basic ideas, and fundamental content of institutional innovation are proposed, enhancing the academic value of the research. Third, academic research on the Shanzhai economy is limited, and the systematic application of theories such as regional economics, development economics, ecology, and institutional economics to the study of Shanzhai economic development is even rarer. This multi-disciplinary and multi-perspective research approach broadens the scope of the study. Particularly from a "humanistic" perspective, using economic anthropology theory, the development of the Shanzhai economy is elevated from a narrow understanding of economic growth to a higher level of sustainability, people-centered development, and the comprehensive improvement of the quality and well-being of Shanzhai farmers.
