The so-called "ancient manuscript" of Dream of the Red Chamber is ancient if it predates the appearance of the printed version by Cheng Weiyuan. Before that, all manuscripts in hand-copied form can be considered ancient versions of Dream of the Red Chamber.
Cao Xueqin did finish Dream of the Red Chamber. The major flaw of the widely circulated 120-chapter version lies in its forced "unity," making Cao Xueqin's first 80 chapters accommodate Gao E's last 40. This "editing" process is not just a poor fit but a blatant substitution of the innocent for the guilty.
Therefore, to savor Cao Xueqin's Dream of the Red Chamber, one must read the ancient version. I earnestly recommend Zhou Hui's edition of Dream of the Red Chamber—it is the culmination of Zhou Ruchang's lifelong dedication to studying the novel and can be regarded as an authentic manuscript.
This book is divided into three parts, covering:
- The stories of the ancient and widely circulated versions
- A full revelation of the first 80 chapters of the ancient Dream of the Red Chamber
- An unveiling of the 81st to 108th chapters of Cao Xueqin's Dream of the Red Chamber
