When we sweat profusely, searching for or observing rock art amidst thorns and cliffs, this feeling becomes even stronger. Even with a guide, reaching the rock art sites is extremely arduous. It can be imagined how difficult it was for the discoverers of rock art to "find" rock art in the midst of mountains! After finally seeing the rock art, those blurry or seemingly monotonous images often leave many feeling disappointed and bewildered. Similarly, it can be imagined how difficult it is for rock art researchers to "see" something meaningful in such "paintings" without the perseverance of "ten years facing the wall"! Since the predecessors began discovering Yunnan rock art in the 1950s, over half a century, numerous ethnological and archaeological experts from Yunnan have ventured into remote mountains and wilderness, discovering or investigating at least 60 rock art sites. The hardship and value of this work are extraordinary. The academic value of Yunnan rock art is now recognized worldwide. In 1999, the editorial committee of the "Comprehensive Collection of Zhi Nan Ethnic Art" published by Yunnan Fine Arts Publishing House launched this project again. The compilation of the book "Art of Yunnan Rock Art" was highly challenging. How to maintain academic quality while ensuring artistic visual appeal? How to innovate while also considering the broader material scope? To this end, we have incorporated achievements from various fields, including some of our past work, in order to present a more comprehensive picture of Yunnan rock art.
