Features: Regional coordinated development in China is constrained by two factors: resource and environmental carrying capacity, and the development capacity of the regions themselves. The reason why resource and environmental carrying capacity constrains regional coordinated development is twofold. First, the spatial distribution of the population is unreasonable, with economic agglomeration areas not serving as population centers, and a large number of people scattered in ecologically fragile and sensitive areas. Second, the types and intensity of regional economic activities exceed the range of the region's resource and environmental carrying capacity. Promoting the formation of key functional areas involves two aspects: first, guiding the reasonable spatial distribution of the population through migration; second, imposing functional restrictions on regions, thereby limiting the types and intensity of regional economic activities, which in turn alleviates the constraints of resource and environmental conditions on economic and social development.
This book is based on the promotion of regional coordinated development and conducts preliminary research on the zoning and construction of key functional areas from the perspective of optimizing the spatial allocation of population, resources, and the environment. It is the first book in China to study key functional areas. The book is divided into seven chapters. The first chapter defines the scope of key functional areas and provides a brief review of the basic theories involved in the research. The second chapter focuses on the indicators, procedures, and methods of key functional area zoning. Chapters three to five focus on the construction of key functional areas, including the tasks, planning, and policies of construction. Chapter six presents an empirical study on the zoning and construction of key functional areas. The seventh chapter provides further prospects for the zoning and construction of key functional areas in China. This book can serve as a reference for researchers and management personnel in regional economics, population, resource, and environmental economics.
