Features: This book balances historical depth and geographical breadth, exploring the development and interaction of travel and disease over three thousand years. It also provides various travel medical knowledge from the perspective of "travel medicine" in the 20th century, offering experience and advice for the well-being of modern travelers. The book delves into the complex relationship between travel and disease spanning three millennia, aiming to ensure readers have a healthy and enjoyable journey. It introduces two new concepts: "Classical Travel Medicine" and "Modern Travel Medicine."
Starting in the 16th century, European countries expanded their colonies, advancing into tropical regions. Colonizers and soldiers, carrying the rise and fall of their nations, were dispatched worldwide, and maintaining their health became a crucial national priority. Tropical medicine, developed to address the health issues of colonizers, and military medicine, designed to care for soldiers, emerged in this era. These two colonial-era medical disciplines served as the prototypes for travel medicine, which the book terms "Classical Travel Medicine."
In the latter half of the 19th century, classical travel medicine flourished in Europe and America due to the aggression of colonial imperialism and the rapid development of microbiology. However, with the outbreak of World War II, classical travel medicine eventually faded away amid the rise of nationalism. It wasn't until the 1960s that Europe and America began to develop a new form of travel medicine focused on international travel, known as "Modern Travel Medicine."
