Patient's question:
I am 27 years old this year, and I have been divorced for a year. My family is eager to have children, but I have Down syndrome. I want to ask if male Down syndrome would interfere with normal conception?Doctor's answer:
Down syndrome, also known as trisomy 21, is a congenital disorder caused by an abnormality in human chromosome 21. It is characterized by distinct facial features at birth and often presents with lethargy and feeding difficulties. The intellectual disability becomes more apparent with age, and both motor and sexual development are delayed. Affected children typically have wide-set eyes, a flat nasal bridge, small palpebral fissures, slanted lateral eyes, small ears, a fat tongue that often protrudes outward, excessive drooling, short stature, a smaller head circumference than normal, and a shift of the triradiate fold on the middle palm towards the distal end. Common features include transverse palmar creases and sandal feet. Approximately half of the affected children develop an arch-shaped palmar crease on the thumb ball. The immune system of these children is weakened, making them more susceptible to infections, so it is important to take precautions to prevent them.
