The Strategies of the Warring States is a compilation of discourses by strategists and various individuals during the Warring States period, discussing state affairs and current events. The book features elegant prose and vivid descriptions, reflecting the unique social characteristics of the Warring States period and serving as important historical material for studying that era. However, the content is extensive and often contradictory, with numerous unresolved issues. Previous scholars have devoted considerable effort to organizing and annotating this work, yet to this day, no ideal edition or annotated version has been published. Professor Fan Xiangyong spent decades completing The Annotated Zhan Zheng of The Strategies of the Warring States, a rare and significant work in the study and organization of The Strategies of the Warring States. The book is based on the Qing Jiaqing 19th-year (1814) reprint of the Shan Chuan Yao Family Edition of the Song dynasty, supplemented by comparisons with the Hubei Chongwen Book Bureau’s facsimile of the Huang edition. It extensively incorporates annotations from scholars both ancient and modern, including Gao You, Yao Hong, Bao Bi, and Wu Shidao, conducting careful discrimination and verification. It corrects errors and omissions, fills gaps, and proposes original insights. Based on this foundation, the book not only examines the origins and transmissions of the Zhan Zheng of The Strategies of the Warring States and collects a comprehensive range of annotations from various scholars, but also provides critical evaluations and corrections, offering many original insights. To date, it is the most comprehensive and systematic annotated edition of The Strategies of the Warring States. The publication of this book will provide valuable references for the study of the Warring States period and make significant contributions to academic research.
