The work is deeply rooted in local culture while also carrying a touch of exoticism. Its rich lyrical quality, strong emotional tone, and sentimental descriptions are deeply connected to European Romantic literature. The story mainly follows the different fates of two young women. The beautiful and cunning white girl Manuela, who is vain and greedy for wealth, falls in love at first sight with the bandit leader "Blue Eyes" by chance. She then abandons the Indian youth Nicolas, who truly loves her, and secretly meets with "Blue Eyes," eventually abandoning her mother to embrace the bandits. Bilara, a humble rural girl and goddaughter of Manuela's mother, declares her love to Nicolas when he is imprisoned and does her utmost to rescue him. In the end, they are happily married. However, Manuela, who falls into the bandits' den, does not find happiness but instead suffers both mentally and physically. Soon after, government forces raid the bandit stronghold, "Blue Eyes" is executed, and Manuela dies on the spot from coughing up blood.
