As the vast Gengger Grassland gradually opens its arms, the entire caravan erupts in cheers. At first glance, it’s a common escort office within the inner regions—uniform flags, vehicle markings, and proper names. The only thing that catches the eye is a small, crimson talisman stuck on the red-painted escort carriage. Upon closer inspection, it depicts a phoenix in mid-flight, its posture sinuous and exuding a commanding aura more fierce than ordinary phoenix designs.
It’s late spring now, and the entire grassland is drenched in a proud shade of green, so vivid and vibrant, competing with the boundless blue sky. Dewdrops on the grass tips reflect the light of the rising sun, clear as a child’s eyes. Even the rough-hewn men in the caravan can’t help but be captivated by the scenery, their faces lighting up with smiles.
"Master! Look over there—that’s Dalin Lake!" A young man in his late teens pointed to the horizon, shouting in excitement. The one called "Master" was a young man in his early twenties, wearing a brocade robe over a black sable fur. Yet, he wore a neatly tied Lin Zong headband, suppressing his slanted eyebrows. Amidst the burly men around him, he seemed particularly slender. He lightly tapped his left folding fan against his right hand with approval. "Dandong, is that where you said the swans take flight?"
Dandong’s dark face glistened with sweat, his smile sincere as he nodded vigorously. "Yes, Master! We’ll reach the lake by evening today and set up camp. It’s the perfect season—definitely time to see the swans!"
The Master nodded slightly. "Alas, the little birds don’t know the ambitions of the great geese!"
Dandong quickly chimed in, "Red foxes? Yes, I heard from the master of the escort office that there really are red foxes here. If it’s autumn, their fur will grow so thick—oh, imagine how beautiful a hat made from it would be!"
The Master chuckled dryly. "Dandong, the geese and swans are the ones I’m referring to—where are the foxes?"
