Features: In the 20th century, the wave of industrialization swept across the globe, creating unparalleled material wealth. At the same time, the world faced a series of new challenges, including resource depletion, environmental degradation, and widening regional disparities. Against this backdrop, the concept of sustainable development was proposed and gained widespread recognition worldwide. It is both a philosophy, a culture, and a strategy, the implementation of which depends on the transformation of human society's values, wealth perspective, development philosophy, and even scientific outlook. It signifies a profound shift in human society's production methods, lifestyles, and organizational approaches, marking a turning point and leap in the stage of human civilization. True sustainable development is not a continuation of industrial civilization but a brand-new way of human survival built on the principles of "harmony" and "justice." It is dynamic, constantly evolving, and keeps pace with the times. To this end, experts and scholars from China and abroad, who have long been engaged in research and practice in environmental and sustainable development, conducted a series of lectures and discussions on "New Advances in Sustainable Development," aiming to deepen and enrich the understanding of this concept. The publication of this book is an effort to inspire more people to think deeply about what sustainable development is and how to transition toward it in terms of ideology, direction, and behavior. This book is a of the "New Advances in Sustainable Development" open course at Peking University from September to December 2005, serving as a reference for a broad readership.
