Every time I open the boxes and archives filled with my husband's letters, telegrams, and drawings, I can't help but tremble slightly. — Consolée de Saint-Exupéry
Dear Consolée,
My little mouse with feathers, my geranium tree, my madwoman, my dear, how are you? I miss you so much. I really miss you, deeply, like a clear spring. However, God knows how unbearable you are, wild and unreasonable, but behind all this lies a quiet glimmer, such kindness and gentleness, a true wife.
Dear Consolée, you are the wife who accompanies me all my life, until the very last breath of my life.
— Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
After World War II, the container carrying Antoine and Consolée from New York to Paris on a large cargo ship remained unopened for 60 years, burying all the treasures of their love, the last legend of the magical world constructed by "The Little Prince." In letters to his family, he kept calling her, unaware that this woman had already stood before him. Her name was Consolée de Saint-Ouen. In 1927, she became the widow of Gómez Carrillo, a Guatemalan writer who had obtained Argentine nationality and served as the Argentine consul. Consolée had married this long-winded writer a year earlier, who had written dozens of works, one of which was a biography of Mata Hari that caused a sensation. Consolée came to Argentina to settle his estate, including a villa in Nice and an apartment on Calle Castelar in Paris, as well as to reclaim some properties that already belonged to her.
Consolée herself was South American, more precisely Salvadoran, born into a coffee plantation family of Armenian descent. Her family was one of the seven wealthiest families in the country. She received a scholarship to study in the United States and settled in San Francisco at the age of 19. There, she married her first husband—Cardo Cardenas, though no one knew whether he was a young Mexican official or merely an office worker. Two years later, he died in a popular revolution or an accident. In Los Angeles, the wild and free Consolée was invited to a bar named after Rudolph Valentino to dance, performing an passionate tango.
