Does intercostal neuralgia get better?

Patient's question:

Recently, I've been experiencing chest pain, especially when coughing, which intensifies the pain. The diagnosis is intercostal neuralgia. Could you please tell me if intercostal neuralgia can be relieved?

Doctor's answer:

The chest pain you mentioned intensifies during coughing, which could be caused by intercostal neuralgia. It could also be due to muscle damage in the intercostal muscles resulting from certain training or trauma, or it may recur in this manner. In the early stages of intercostal muscle damage, there may be no discomfort. Generally, pain symptoms begin to reappear 3 to 4 days after the injury and will gradually subside over about 15 days, eventually fully recovering. If it is intercostal neuralgia, there is usually radiating pain, and some nerve-nourishing medications can be used, such as vitamin B or methylcobalamin, for example.
