How is ascites formed?

Patient's question:

I previously had symptoms of decreased appetite, nausea, and dry heaving, followed by a reduction in abdominal size. I was unsure whether it was weight gain or something else. Later, I also experienced discomfort symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating pain, and swelling. Now, shortness of breath has reappeared again, and the doctor said it is ascites. I don't know how ascites is formed.

Doctor's answer:

The so-called ascites refers to abdominal fluid caused by a liver disease in patients, such as ascites caused by cirrhosis, for example. Among them, ascites caused by cirrhosis may occur because the patient develops hypoproteinemia due to cirrhosis, which in turn leads to ascites. Currently, it is recommended that patients undergo tests such as the hepatitis B five-item test, liver function tests, and abdominal organ color Doppler ultrasound, etc. Based on the results of these tests, it can be determined how to take liver-protecting and enzyme-lowering medications for treatment. Additionally, the extent of ascites will be considered to decide whether to perform paracentesis for ascites treatment.
