Is the contagious?

Patient's question:

I am 38 years old. Recently, I feel that my liver is very tired. I haven't had much appetite, and at night, I always feel a sharp pain in my stomach. I went to the nearby hospital for a check-up and was told it was liver disease. They advised me to get an injection. Is hepatitis B (HBeAg positive) contagious?

Doctor's answer:

Hepatitis B itself is a blood-borne infectious disease, primarily transmitted through blood and not through the digestive or respiratory routes. However, if there is an opportunity for blood exposure, such as sharing toothpaste or engaging in sexual contact, transmission is also possible. Since you have a small positive hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), your viral load may not be high, and thus the risk of transmission is relatively low. It is recommended that your boyfriend undergo a hepatitis B panel test and receive the hepatitis B vaccine if necessary to prevent infection.
