Is newborn jaundice level 280 serious?

Patient's question:

My baby is one month old. Recently, his face and body have been a bit pale, and he doesn't seem to eat much and often sleeps during the afternoon nap. The blood test showed jaundice at 280. Do I have to be admitted to the hospital for blue light treatment?

Doctor's answer:

Neonatal jaundice. First, consider if it is physiological jaundice. As long as it is not severe, it can usually disappear completely within 2 weeks. If the jaundice is relatively severe or persists, it is pathological jaundice. If the jaundice level is relatively severe, hospital treatment is generally recommended, usually involving blue light therapy.
After a newborn is born for 24 hours, serum bilirubin gradually rises from 17 to 51 μmol/L at birth to 86 μmol/L or higher, without other abnormal body symptoms. The serum bilirubin level for physiological jaundice should not exceed 204 μmol/L for full-term infants and should not exceed 255 μmol/L for premature infants.
