Tsinghua University of Arts and Design Gaokao No. 1 Pre-exam Demonstration: Sketch

Author: Wang Qian

Features: In Wang Qian's sketches, the lines are not overly ornate, and the technique is not yet fully refined. Yet, it is precisely this quality that preserves her works' rare sensitivity, allowing the figures she depicts to embody a contemplative wisdom and the magic of sudden inspiration. On the path of painting, one's eyes are often lost in the surface elegance and beauty, forgetting to retain what we call "feeling" in the artwork. This feeling is unseen in formulaic forms, in conceptualized shapes, and in works driven by impatience for quick results—yet it is exactly what can be felt in Wang Qian's works. The reason Wang Qian has been recognized by the Academy of Arts at Tsinghua University is not because she has already achieved perfection, but because she has preserved the sincere self that we should all cherish. Wang Qian is a highly perceptive student, but perception cannot replace hard work. The she has climbed is built from stacks of sketches, and the space she has created is filled with hope.
