In 1983: Beyond was formed, and the band was created to participate in a music competition. Beyond did not disappoint, winning the championship by performing their own songs. The original members were Wong Ka Kui and Yip Sai Wing, along with two others. At that time, Beyond was still not fully formed, and they also played with several other bands, such as Wong Ka Kui and Wong Ka Keung, along with Deng Jianming, the former leader of Taiji. They formed a band called NASA. The songs they created at that time, such as "Building," were mainly in English... The musical style was mostly Art Rock, focusing on technicality and valuing musical variation.
In 1990: Beyond had become a prominent band in Hong Kong and had branched into both commercial and underground music. Their schedule in 1990 was also very busy. They participated in the film "Happy Ghost 3" (also known as "Happy Ghost Rescues Happy Ghost") and performed the theme song "Overcoming Demons," along with other songs like "The Declaration of Wen Wu Ying Jie." They were also invited to write a song for the campaign "Green Generation, New Ideas," titled "Sent to Those Who Don’t Understand Environmental Protection (Including Me)." They also sang an insert song for the film "Love in the Sky" (Taiwanese title: "Chasing Dreams"). Wong Ka Kui, Paul, and Wong Ka Keung each performed a song. They also officially entered Southeast Asia, releasing their first Mandarin album "Earth." It’s worth noting that the Mandarin version of "The Declaration of Wen Wu Ying Jie" was not included in this album. Beyond was gradually moving toward internationalization, and in the same year, they released the album "Destiny Party." The song "Face-to-Face Party" in this album satirizes the bizarre phenomena in the entertainment industry. This album also included many songs that showed concern for the Third World, such as "Glory Days," which was written by Wong Ka Kui as a tribute to Nelson Mandela of South Africa. Opposing racial discrimination and hoping for world peace had always been Beyond’s wish. As a result, Wong Ka Kui became the annual Best Lyricist, and Beyond also became the spokesperson for the Hong Kong World Vision.
