What does a thyroid nodule grade 2 mean?

Patient's question:

Doctor, I want to ask what does a 2-grade thyroid nodule mean? A few weeks ago, my cousin's company arranged for a health check-up. After he received the results, he noticed there was an abnormality, so he came back and asked me what it was. Is it serious? Does it need treatment?

Doctor's answer:

A thyroid nodule of grade II indicates that it is primarily benign and rarely undergoes malignant transformation. Additionally, surgery is not required for treatment. Typically, grade II thyroid nodules are managed through close observation, with periodic follow-up thyroid ultrasound examinations. If the nodule suddenly grows rapidly in size, or if symptoms such as toothache or compression of nerves and blood vessels, the trachea, etc., reappear, then surgical removal should be considered.
