Will encephalitis recur?

Patient's question:

My grandfather is over 70 years old this year. He was diagnosed with encephalitis two days ago and has already been discharged after treatment. The doctor advised him to avoid certain foods, but he said he's already in his late 70s, not eating this and that, and that it's not worth dying for. So he didn't follow the advice. How many times like this could trigger a recurrence of encephalitis?

Doctor's answer:

I don't know whether the encephalitis suffered by the elderly is caused by a bacterial infection or a viral infection. However, whether it is the transmission caused by either of the aforementioned pathogens, it is generally not much related to diet. Therefore, a conventional diet is sufficient. Currently, it is recommended that the elderly undergo a thorough lumbar puncture to examine cerebrospinal fluid. The purpose is to preliminarily determine which pathogen is causing the encephalitis, so that the appropriate medication can be selected for treatment.
