How to interpret the Asthma Prediction Index

Patient's question:

How to read the Asthma Prediction Index? It seems my child has asthma. The doctor recommended us to do the Asthma Prediction. How to read the Asthma Prediction Index?

Doctor's answer:

Asthma prediction primarily involves assessing asthma symptoms and exacerbations. For children with a history of asthma, how they develop persistent asthma is a key consideration. Additionally, the frequency of asthma attacks is taken into account. If asthma occurs more than four times in the past year, this test is recommended. If it falls outside this range, it is not necessary to consider it. This also includes primary and secondary factors. If there is one implied primary factor or multiple secondary factors, it is predicted or anticipated as persistent asthma. For children under three years old, if they experience more than four asthma relapses in a year and the Asthma Prediction Index (API) is positive, their risk of developing asthma between the ages of 6-13 is 4-6 times higher. If the API is negative, there is a 95% chance they will not develop asthma.
