Author: Ma Degao, Editor-in-Chief

Publishing Date: 2006-02-01
Features: In 2004, the College English Test Band 4 and Band 6 (CET-4 and CET-6) was officially released with a new syllabus. The new syllabus clearly states that starting from 2005, the new CET-4 and CET-6 exams will place greater emphasis on assessing students' fundamental English skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation) as well as their basic knowledge at three levels: vocabulary, syntax, and discourse. The exams will also focus more on reflecting students' comprehensive language application abilities, highlight the professional and humanistic aspects of the tests, and increase the assessment of cultural and sociolinguistic knowledge. Newly Compiled English Course (Revised Edition) is a comprehensive reading textbook published by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press, designed for college English majors. It is a highly popular and widely adopted excellent textbook used by many universities across the country. The textbook is rich in content and covers a broad range of topics, with many passages extracted from authentic English and American texts. While students gain cultural exposure, they may also encounter varying levels of difficulty. To help English majors align their regular textbook learning with the new teaching objectives and exam requirements, improve their comprehensive language skills systematically, and enhance their test-taking abilities in sync with future assessments, we have invited a team of frontline teachers with a deep understanding of English major teaching reform and exam reform, as well as extensive teaching experience, to meticulously research and design this series of Comprehensive Study Guides for Newly Compiled English Course texts. This series of guides features four interactive characteristics in its writing and design:
1. Integration of Textbook Learning and Humanistic Knowledge
Each unit provides multiple cultural background materials related to the text, allowing you to broaden your horizons, enrich your knowledge, and enhance your cultural literacy while studying the text, thereby expanding textbook learning into a comprehensive humanistic education.
2. Dual Improvement of Reading Comprehension and Writing Appreciation
While explaining the text and improving your reading skills, we analyze and evaluate the text from multiple perspectives—such as writing style and techniques—to enhance your ability to appreciate and critique writing.
3. Synchronized Enhancement of Language Application and Test-Taking Skills
By comprehensively improving students' language application skills through text study and explanation, we also align the learning with the CET-4 and CET-6 exams, ensuring that students improve both their practical language abilities and test-taking proficiency simultaneously.
4. Organic Combination of Answer Explanations and Systematic Knowledge Organization
In addition to providing authoritative and detailed answers to post-text and workbook exercises, we also systematically organize and review related linguistic points and knowledge, promoting interactive improvement.
This book is the third volume of Comprehensive Study Guides for Newly Compiled English Course. The structure and features of each unit are as follows:
Bilingual Cultural Background Reading
This section offers bilingual cultural background extensions, introducing relevant cultural knowledge (including customs, festivals, related figures, and authorial works) mentioned in the text to help students better understand the material while broadening their knowledge, accumulating information, and enhancing their cultural literacy in English and American studies.
Analysis and Appreciation of Text Style
This section evaluates the writing style of the text and analyzes its discourse structure, extracting key content to help students improve their overall understanding of text organization, writing techniques, and composition.
Framework Analysis of Complex Sentences
This section breaks down complex sentences in each text into frameworks, guiding students on how to deconstruct and understand them, thereby strengthening their ability to perceive and analyze complex sentence structures, improving reading comprehension, and enhancing translation skills.
Core Vocabulary and Phrases Learning
This section employs the widely popular "Spark-like" memorization method to help students efficiently memorize core vocabulary and phrases in the text. We move away from the conventional practice of simply listing words and phrases in textbook guides, emphasizing a "combination of visuals and context" teaching philosophy. For frequently tested core vocabulary and phrases, we assist students in memorization through picture aids, contextual aids, and comparative explanations.
Authoritative Answer Explanations
This section provides authoritative and detailed answers to post-text exercises in the "Student Book" and all workbook exercises. Additionally, the authors—seasoned educators with years of experience in frontline English teaching—explain some of the exercises, pinpointing students' knowledge gaps and offering practical guidance.
Furthermore, this book includes the listening script for the listening section, helping students better complete their listening practice.
