Features: In 2004, the College English Test Band 4 and Band 6 (CET-4 and CET-6) was officially released with a new syllabus. The new syllabus clearly states that starting from 2005, the new CET-4 and CET-6 exams will place greater emphasis on assessing students' fundamental English skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation) as well as their basic knowledge at three levels: vocabulary, syntax, and discourse. The exams will also focus more on reflecting students' comprehensive language application abilities, highlight the professional and humanistic aspects of the tests, and include more questions on cultural and sociolinguistic knowledge. Newly Compiled English Course (Revised Edition) is a comprehensive reading textbook published by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press, designed for college English majors. It is a highly popular and widely adopted excellent textbook used by many universities across the country. The textbook is rich in content and covers a broad range of topics, with many passages extracted from authentic English and American texts. While students are exposed to extensive cultural knowledge, they may also encounter varying degrees of difficulty. To help English majors align their learning with the new teaching objectives and exam requirements, improve their comprehensive language abilities systematically, and enhance their test-taking skills simultaneously, we have invited a team of frontline teachers with a deep understanding of English major teaching reform and exam reform, as well as extensive teaching experience, to meticulously research and design this series of Comprehensive Study Guides for Newly Compiled English Course Texts.
This series of study guides features four interactive characteristics in its writing and design:
1. Integration of Textbook Learning and Humanistic Knowledge
Each unit provides multiple cultural background materials related to the text, allowing students to broaden their horizons, enrich their knowledge, and enhance their cultural literacy while studying the text, thereby expanding textbook learning into a comprehensive humanistic knowledge acquisition process.
2. Dual Improvement of Reading Comprehension and Writing Appreciation
While explaining the text and improving reading skills, we analyze and evaluate the writing style and techniques of the text from multiple perspectives, synchronously enhancing students' writing appreciation abilities.
3. Synchronized Enhancement of Language Application and Test-Taking Skills
In the process of teaching and explaining the text, we comprehensively improve students' language application abilities while paying attention to aligning with the CET-4 and CET-6 exams, achieving simultaneous improvement in both practical and test-taking skills.
4. Organic Combination of Answer Explanations and Systematic Knowledge Organization
In addition to providing authoritative and detailed answers to post-text exercises and workbook questions, we also systematically organize related linguistic points and knowledge, promoting interactive improvement.
This book is the third volume of Comprehensive Study Guides for Newly Compiled English Course Texts. The structure and features of each unit are as follows:
- Bilingual Cultural Background Reading
This section provides bilingual cultural background materials, introducing relevant cultural knowledge (including customs, festivals, related figures, and literary works) mentioned in the text to help students better understand the text while broadening their knowledge and accumulating information, thereby enhancing their cultural literacy in English and American studies.
- Analysis and Appreciation of Textual Style
This section evaluates the writing style of the text and analyzes its discourse structure, extracting key content to help students improve their overall understanding of discourse, writing, and structure, as well as their writing skills.
- Framework Analysis of Complex Sentences
This section analyzes complex sentences in each text, providing methods to break them down and cultivating students' ability to perceive and analyze complex sentence structures, thereby enhancing their reading comprehension and translation skills.
- Core Vocabulary and Phrases Learning
This section fully utilizes the popular "Spark-like" memory method to help students memorize core vocabulary and phrases in the text efficiently. We move away from the common practice of simply and phrases in textbook guides, emphasizing a "double combination" teaching philosophy of "memorizing words with visuals and context." For frequently tested core vocabulary and phrases, we assist students in memorization through picture aids, contextual aids, and comparative explanations.
- Authoritative Answer Explanations
This section provides authoritative and detailed answers to post-text exercises in the "Student Book" and all workbook questions. Additionally, the authors—experienced frontline teachers with years of teaching experience in English major education—explain some questions, pinpointing students' knowledge weaknesses and offering practical guidance.
Furthermore, this book includes the listening scripts for the listening sections, helping students better complete their listening exercises.
