What is hypokalemia

Patient's question:

Recently, I always felt unwell, so today I went to the hospital for treatment. The detailed examination results showed that I have hypokalemia. I want to know what hypokalemia is and what causes it?

Doctor's answer:

The first reason is insufficient intake of potassium, mainly referring to our dietary aspects. For example, factors such as oral or gastrointestinal diseases, where the person cannot eat, etc., can lead to this condition. The second reason is excessive excretion. Potassium in the blood has multiple pathways for excretion, one of the most important being through the urine. If the kidneys excrete too much potassium, it can cause hypokalemia. The third factor is the transfer of extracellular potassium into the cells, which we call transferable hypokalemia.
