How to handle a child's cold, cough, and fever

Patient's question:

A few days ago, my child had a cold and cough, and also had a slight fever. In the past few days, after taking medicine, the fever has subsided, and the cough has become milder. However, at night when it's time to take a nap, his body is still quite warm. When measuring his abdomen, it's around 38 degrees plus, but when measuring his forehead, it's around 36 degrees. We didn't use a mercury thermometer—what could be the reason for this?

Doctor's answer:

The child has a cold and cough, which is likely caused by a respiratory infection. Respiratory infections are generally divided into viral and bacterial causes, with viral infections accounting for about 80% of cases. Currently, the child's cough is quite severe, and symptomatic treatment should be administered. Oral liquids can usually be given to the child for treatment. If it doesn't improve after a long time, it's best to take the child for a blood test to check for bacterial infection. If bacterial infection is present, antibiotics will be needed. Also, ensure the child drinks plenty of water, eats more fruits and vegetables, and maintains a light diet.
