Is dwarfism the same as short stature?

Patient's question:

My brother has had poor nutrition since childhood and has been in poor health. He often experiences stomach pain and has a poor appetite. His weight is only 45 pounds. Both my parents are short in stature, but I am tall, while my brother is very short. I would like to consult whether dwarfism and short stature are the same thing?

Doctor's answer:

Dwarfism is caused by an increase in the secretion of growth hormone during the growth and development period. If the thyroid hormone is insufficiently secreted during the growth and development period, it may lead to intellectual development disorders again. Short stature refers to a child's height being more than 2 standard deviations above the average height of children of the same gender, age, and race, or a growth rate of more than 5 centimeters per year. Therefore, these two conditions are different.
