How do children get sepsis

Patient's question:

After 7 days of the colleague's child being born, the doctor conducted a thorough examination and discovered sepsis. The infection is more severe than usual, resembling a complication of hyperbilirubinemia, and the child is currently in a coma. Sometimes the low fever doesn't subside. The doctor said there is a need to perform a lumbar puncture to examine the brain. How did sepsis occur, and how did the child get sepsis?

Doctor's answer:

Neonatal sepsis is quite serious, and its early clinical manifestations are often atypical, especially in premature infants. It can manifest as reduced milk intake or refusal to breastfeed, spitting up, anorexia, restlessness, low crying tone, fever or hypothermia, or non-specific symptoms such as normal body temperature, poor responsiveness, pale or grayish complexion, lethargy, or failure to gain weight. It is generally caused by colds, primarily due to toxins.
