Features: Hongyi (1880—1942), also known by the secular name Li Shuxun, was born in Tianjin. His childhood name was Chengxi, and his given name was Wentao. Originally from Pinghu, Zhejiang, he embraced Buddhism in 1918, taking the dharma name Yanyin and the title Hongyi. In his early life, Li Shuxun was a dashing young man of refined tastes, deeply immersed in pleasure-seeking. After ordaining, he adopted a vegetarian diet, wore coarse robes, and traveled on foot, ultimately becoming a renowned monk who revitalized the Nan Mountain Vinaya tradition. Li Shuxun's extraordinary talent was reflected not only in literature, drama, music, art, education, and editing but also in his highly accomplished calligraphy and seal carving. As is widely known, Hongyi Master's calligraphy was the most prominent, influential, and accomplished of all his artistic endeavors. For Hongyi himself, it was also an endeavor marked by diligent practice and profound dedication. The later his calligraphy became, the more perfect it became, reaching a state of artistic perfection. Thus, the brilliance of Hongyi Master's calligraphy lies not only in his distinctive brushwork and structure but more so in the unified spirit that transcends technical rules, emerging from his heart.
