Features: Since the 1980s and 1990s, Zhang Guang has created numerous outstanding works centered around painting oxen and horses, forming two alternating styles. One, primarily represented by his paintings of oxen, is a realistic style, which he also applies to painting camels and dogs, with works such as Desert Ship, Two Camels, Two Dogs, and Autumn Wind. The other, primarily focused on painting horses, is a modern style. He also uses it to paint turkeys, with works such as Group of Turkeys, Black, White, and Gray, and Block Print Turkey. The former has enriched the tradition of modern ink realism with traditional brushwork, making animal paintings more lifelike while also freeing expressive brushwork from the conventions of predecessors, developing a new realm of "method beyond method." The latter has enriched the traditional Chinese painting tradition of "subtlety between resemblance and dissimilarity" by absorbing Western modern art, enhancing the visual tension of animal paintings, and expressing the rhythm of the times.
