Features: Since the 1980s, with the prominence of globalization and regionalization trends in the world economy, regional economic research has become an important and popular topic, yielding some results. However, most studies have remained at the macro level, focusing on larger regional economies such as the eastern, central, and western regions, or mountainous economies, while neglecting consideration of the local, personalized aspects of regional economic development at the micro level. (Shanzhai) is a special type of region. The Shanzhai economy is a significant component of multi-level regional economies. Yet, the development of Shanzhai economies has long been overlooked. Three years ago, the author began researching this topic. This project was funded by the Hunan Provincial Natural Science Foundation and the Provincial Education Department. Four papers from the research findings were fully reprinted in the journal Agricultural Economics Guide by the Renmin University of China, and two were excerpted in Xinhua Zhai. As a result, research on Shanzhai economic development has garnered academic attention. This paper takes the economic development of the Wuling Mountains as a case study, aiming to explore the path of Shanzhai economic development in typical environments through the study of commodity production activities such as planting, animal husbandry, processing, and services conducted by farmers living in Wuling Shanzhai, utilizing unique natural conditions and resources. The goal is to provide a typical example for the development of Shanzhai economies in similar environments and to construct a general theoretical framework for Shanzhai economic development. This holds significant importance for promoting the overall development of Shanzhai economies in China, increasing household income, improving quality of life, enhancing ecological environments, and ultimately fostering coordinated regional economic development. The author believes that Shanzhai economies differ from mountainous development and mountainous economies, as well as from ethnic economies. To study the development of Shanzhai economies, it is essential to grasp the fundamental conditions and characteristics of Shanzhai economic development. The ecological factors cluster, cultural factors cluster, and socio-economic factors cluster, shaped by special geographical locations, natural environments, and resource endowments, form the basic material carrying conditions influencing Shanzhai economic development. Specifically, Shanzhai economic development is affected by natural factors such as regional climate conditions, natural resources, and geographical locations, as well as economic factors like the existing level of economic development, current productivity, and infrastructure conditions. Additionally, it is influenced by social factors such as population size, density, ethnicity, culture, and environmental protection. These factors give Shanzhai economies characteristics such as ethnic identity, closedness, backwardness, and environmental fragility. The ideal path for Shanzhai economic development involves updating concepts, developing specialized economies, conducting inter-regional cooperation, increasing investment efficiency, advancing science and education, and expanding markets. To achieve effective development, it is necessary to address issues such as the development of resources, ecological environmental protection, the utilization of human resources, and market-oriented development. Research has found that institutional gaps significantly constrain Shanzhai economic development. Therefore, it is proposed that Shanzhai economic development must adhere to principles of keeping pace with the times, being pragmatic, and innovating. Furthermore, this paper explores issues such as the distinctive development, sustainable development, and comprehensive development of Shanzhai economies, and proposes views and measures for the comprehensive development of Shanzhai economies, advocating for "developing Shanzhai economies beyond Shanzhai." The research is divided into ten chapters.
Chapter 1: Introduction
This chapter focuses on analyzing the conditions and characteristics of Shanzhai economic development, using the current state of economic development in the Wuling Mountains as an example. Chapter 10: Summary of Research Findings on Shanzhai Economic Development
This chapter summarizes the conclusions drawn from the research on Shanzhai economic development.
This paper, while ensuring a novel topic and scientifically rational organization, also innovates in research perspectives and argumentation methods. These innovations are reflected in the following aspects:
First, studying Shanzhai economies at the micro level and proposing targeted and actionable development strategies, enriching theories of regional economic development. Most studies on regional economies focus on macro-level discussions of larger regional economies. Due to the relatively broad scope of these regions, the policies proposed are often difficult to implement in practice. Shanzhai, as a special economic region, belongs to the micro geographical level. This paper considers the partiality and uniqueness of Shanzhai economic development while highlighting its commonalities, enhancing the operability of proposed strategies.
Second, based on the significant role of institutional factors in development, the author incorporates institutional innovation into the field of promoting Shanzhai economic development. Combining the characteristics of Shanzhai economic development, the author exploresively proposes principles, basic ideas, and basic content for institutional innovation, increasing the academic value of the research.
Third, academic research on Shanzhai economic development is limited, and the systematic application of theories such as regional economics, development economics, ecology, and institutional economics to such research is rare. This multi-disciplinary, multi-perspective research approach broadens the scope of the study. Particularly from a "humanistic" perspective, using economic anthropology theory, it elevates the understanding of Shanzhai economic development from a narrow focus on economic growth to a higher level of sustainability, people-centered development, and the comprehensive improvement of the quality and well-being of Shanzhai farmers.
