Patient's question:
My husband has been gaining weight gradually because he often drinks beer with his friends. Last year, he developed alcoholic fatty liver disease, and now he's even fatter. He often complains of nausea and has no appetite. He wants to use some health supplements. Is it effective to use health supplements for fatty liver?Doctor's answer:
Fatty liver, also known as hepatic steatosis, refers to the accumulation of fat within liver cells caused by various factors. When healthy individuals consume a diet with appropriate components, the fat content in the liver accounts for approximately 5% of its weight. If the fat content in the liver is below 5% by wet weight, or if more than one-third of liver cells show lipid droplets under microscopic examination of liver tissue pathology slides, it is termed fatty liver. Ultrasound can detect fatty liver with a fat content of 30% or higher. The lipids generated in the liver are distributed outside the liver in the form of lipoproteins. The phospholipids contained within these lipoproteins are absolutely essential materials for the formation of lipoproteins. When phospholipid production increases in the liver, the fat in the liver cannot be transported out smoothly.
