Should people with polycystic kidney disease have children?

Patient's question:

I am 36 this year and finally got pregnant. The ultrasound carefully detected a polycystic kidney baby. These days, I have been struggling whether to leave it behind. I can't eat or sleep well every day. Should I give birth to the polycystic kidney baby?

Doctor's answer:

The prenatal ultrasound examination carefully detected a baby with polycystic kidney disease. Polycystic kidney disease is a hereditary kidney disease, classified into two types based on the mode of inheritance across generations: ① Autosomal dominant inheritance type, which generally manifests symptoms only after adulthood, hence also known as the adult type; ② Autosomal recessive inheritance type, which typically shows obvious symptoms in infancy, also known as the infant type. The incidence rate of the infant type is approximately 1 in 10,000. The incidence rate of the adult type is about 1 in 1,250. Due to its hereditary nature, it is only possible to speculate how the baby might be affected through regular examinations during pregnancy and postpartum. Currently, it cannot be determined.
