Features: This book is a work created by the renowned British scholar Nora Herz in 2001, and it is her most thought-provoking one. Upon its publication, it was quickly translated into multiple languages, including French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Korean, Portuguese, Japanese, and Traditional Chinese, achieving significant influence. The timely emergence of this book and its rapid expansion of global impact have a special background. Today, we live in a true "global village." Through the internet and emerging technologies, we can easily access various pieces of information and communicate with strangers from all corners of the world—convenience that no previous era could match. At the same time, the integration of the global economy and the continuous development of globalization have also brought hidden risks. As the book states: Among the top 100 economies in the world today, 51 are corporations, while only 49 are nations. When the power and financial strength of corporations surpass those of nations, what kind of blessings or curses does globalization bring? What will our future hold? These are unknowns, but within this uncertainty, there lies hidden concern. What is particularly worrying is that economically weaker nations, lured by attractive investment conditions, cannot refuse the investment of a multinational corporation. And afterward, individuals in a consumer position are equally unable to resist the services offered by multinational corporations, often finding themselves in a position of information disadvantage. In this asymmetric information channel, deception, concealment, and conspiracy abound. Therefore, when the media exposes scandals such as the sweatshops of "Nike" and "Adidas," it often evokes immense anger. This is a clear drawback of globalization, just as its universality means similar events occur in every corner of the world, especially more frequently in developed market economies like those in Europe and America. But precisely because of this, consumers in those regions have accumulated richer experiences, which are invaluable to us Chinese. This is also one of the reasons we chose to publish this book at this time. Of course, this does not mean we endorse all the views in the book. After all, the author comes from the West, and their perspective and stance on issues are bound to differ from ours, particularly when dealing with countries with different systems or at different stages of development. The author's wording may occasionally be biased in such cases. Additionally, the book includes critical remarks on policies implemented by some nations. To address this, we have made appropriate edits, and we also hope readers will maintain a critical and reflective attitude when reading this book, learning to analyze and discern.
