Features: With dreams of a better future and a high sense of duty to the country, Anthony Swofford joined the United States Marine Corps. During basic training, he faced harsh and cruel instructors and endured great humiliation. He was then assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Expeditionary Regiment, where he met a diverse group of "jarheads." Deployed across various parts of Asia for combat missions, he experienced a deeply moving love affair. He followed his unit to the desert and participated in what was then called the Second Gulf War. There, he endured long periods of waiting, faced the brink of death, and experienced the brotherly love among comrades, realizing that he was actually fighting for oil and for the interests of American tycoons. As a sniper, he never truly completed a single sniper mission throughout his service. In the desert for just over six months, Anthony Swofford experienced the full spectrum of life's joys and sorrows—excitement, joy, loneliness, boredom, anger, and despair. Upon returning home, as the sacred mantle of a hero gradually slipped away, he was constantly plagued by feelings of solitude. This led him to write this memoir. The book employs a non-linear narrative with flashbacks, using vivid and humorous language to capture the true mental world of American soldiers during the Second Gulf War. It recreates an unforgettable historical period and tells a poignant story.
