Features: From October 26 to November 26, 2001, social workers from Beijing Horizon Survey Company went deep into mainland China, conducting in-person interviews with a thousand sex workers ("prostitutes"), carrying out China's first social situation survey by a non-governmental organization, exposing the real-life conditions of a marginalized group. In the cities, unemployed and laid-off workers! Farmers who toil under the sun and in the fields year after year yet earn very little! Migrant laborers who risk their lives in small coal mines and other unsafe small quarries to support their families! They are a group of people living on the fringes of mainstream society, known as the vulnerable group. There is also an overlooked group—those living in the shadows of the underground sex industry. From October 26 to November 26, 2001, a group of social workers braved difficulties and obstacles, conducting in-person interviews with a thousand "SWs" to carry out China's first social situation survey by a non-governmental organization, revealing the shocking living conditions of a sorrowful group. This group of "pioneers" came from Beijing Horizon Survey Company. They were commissioned by the DFID (British International Development Agency)-funded "China-UK AIDS/HIV Prevention" project in collaboration with the European Prospect Group to conduct this survey. Dr. Yuan Yue, Chairman of Horizon Research Group, personally guided and participated in this investigation. An open and developing China needs deeper humanistic care. This survey provides a report on an "alternative life" in an "alternative world" to help us understand a group and assist them. Every kind-hearted Chinese person knows that small acts of compassion, when combined, can make the world a better place.
