Features: "K," a erotic novel written by mainland China-based British female author Hongying, was first published in Taiwan in 1999 and then in mainland China. However, it was banned from sale after a reader sued the author, claiming that the book was based on the past lives of the reader's parents and contained obscene content, "violating the honor of the deceased." In July, the two parties reached a settlement. "K" will be republished under the new title "British Lover" with some content rewritten. Hongying wrote a captivating novel that explores the prejudices of Westerners and the meaning of life. The love in the novel is filled with mystery, thus far exceeding the mundane. In this novel, Hongying abandoned the depiction of her personal life but did not abandon the history of her homeland. She examines the clash between Eastern and Western cultures, critiquing Western prejudices against Eastern culture.
After "K" was published in mainland China, Ms. Chen Xiaoling, who lived in the UK, read the book and was extremely angry. She believed that "K" was based on the past lives of her parents, Chen Xiyin and Shu Hua, and used obscene methods to fabricate many indecent scenes, "violating the honor of the deceased." She then sued Hongying in the Changchun Intermediate People's Court. In December last year, the Changchun Intermediate People's Court ruled in favor of the plaintiff, ordering Hongying to compensate Ms. Chen Xiaoling for nearly 200,000 yuan in mental damages, apologize to her in newspapers across the country, and permanently ban the publication and distribution of "K" in any form. As a result, "K" became a banned book.
