The Qianling Museum was established on the site of Tang Dynasty. Although it was officially renamed in August 1978, when the reform and opening-up just began, its history traces back to the early 1960s when the Tang Dynasty Princess Yongtai Tomb was excavated. This was the earliest and highest-ranking large-scale female tomb excavated in Shaanxi after the founding of New China. To properly protect the tomb and strengthen the preservation and research of artifacts from Qianling and its accompanying tombs, as well as to promote the development of Qianling's cultural heritage work, the Qianling Cultural Relics Protection and Management Office was established in August 1961, based on the tomb's excavation. It was the first specialized cultural and museum unit in Shaanxi dedicated to protecting imperial mausoleums, holding pioneering significance and being one of the earliest in the country. Represented by it, the mausoleum museums constitute the main body of Shaanxi's site museums, contributing to the advancement of Shaanxi's museum industry. If counted from this time, Qianling Museum has already gone through nearly half a century of arduous journey.
