Why is newborn jaundice high?

Patient's question:

The baby is now four days old and has developed jaundice because it looks quite yellow. We took it to the hospital for a thorough examination and found that it doesn't meet the standards, so now we are treating it with blue light. Why is the newborn's jaundice so high?

Doctor's answer:

Newborn jaundice is normal. Generally, if the jaundice index of a newborn does not exceed 12.9 mg/dL, it is within the normal range. As long as it does not exceed 15 mg, it is usually physiological jaundice. Physiological jaundice can resolve on its own, so moms don't need to worry too much.
If the baby's jaundice index can be exposed to blue light, or if they drink more water and eat more, and spend more time in the sun, it can help the baby urinate more to excrete bilirubin out of the body. As long as the baby's jaundice level continues to decrease after 7 days, it should be fine.
