Features: The meaning of the "small compartment zoning management and comprehensive tending and felling" operational technique mainly includes two aspects:
(1) Small compartment zoning management. Here, the small compartment is neither the management compartment in planning and design surveys nor the production operation compartment in operational design surveys. It is a fixed, permanent territorial division unit—the management compartment (Management Sabcompartment). The basic factors for zoning are terrain, land features, and land type boundaries. It is composed of one or several adjacent survey compartments with similar forest characteristics, has a fixed area, distinct boundaries, and similar or close forest main compositions, which are conducive to adopting the same management measures. Therefore, it is managed in units of management compartments. Within the management cycle, various management techniques for the management compartments are separately designed, and materials for approval and implementation are proposed. Simultaneously with the survey design, field zoning of the existing management compartments is conducted to form fixed, long-term management compartments.
(2) Comprehensive tending and felling. After the management compartments are determined, due to their fixed geographical locations and boundaries, as well as similar or identical forest conditions, it is conducive to adopting corresponding management measures. Specifically, it mainly includes three aspects: First, regular inspections of changes in compartment factors after management operations, facilitating forest resource management, forest resource monitoring, and the evaluation of forest management benefits, thereby grasping the state of the forest stands. Second, it allows for the establishment of a technical system for management compartments, which can be adapted to local conditions, implement comprehensive management, and implement management techniques, leading to intensive management and transforming forest management from blind to proactive and conscious. Third, it adopts corresponding operational measures.
