Does nephrotic syndrome cause edema?

Patient's question:

I have had nephrotic syndrome for two years, but taking medication has not helped me get better. I went for a thorough check-up again this year, but there was no sign of improvement. In the past few weeks, I have felt a bit of swelling all over my body. Hello doctor, why does nephrotic syndrome cause swelling to reappear?

Doctor's answer:

Edema is a manifestation of nephrotic syndrome. The recurrence and severity of edema are directly related to the degree of hypoproteinemia. In the early stages, it may only manifest as eyelid edema upon waking or as lower limb edema. When serum albumin decreases to a certain extent, edema may gradually subside, and it may even lead to facial edema, severe concave edema in both lower limbs, scalp edema, back edema, scrotal edema, and other manifestations.
