Half a Lifelong Love is a long written by Eileen Chang. Since its publication in the late 1960s, it has been adapted into films, television dramas, stage plays, musicals, and more. Eileen Chang's rewriting of the novel took nearly a year and a half to complete. The new novel was first serialized under the title Record of Confusion in the February to July 1967 issue of Crown magazine in Taipei. In March 1969, the new novel was published as the sixth volume in the series of Eileen Chang's works by Crown Publishing Company, with the title officially determined as Half a Lifelong Love. The rewriting of Half a Lifelong Love from Eighteen Springs highlights Eileen Chang's new artistic conception, representing a brilliant resurgence of Eileen Chang's "Love at First Sight Aesthetics." Although it shares the same roots with Eighteen Springs, it bears different and more vivid fruits.
The Half a Lifelong Love included in this book is compiled based on the first edition and has undergone necessary proofreading. As a writer with a distinct personal style, Eileen Chang's novels are particularly meticulous in word choice. In addition to skillfully using dialects, there are also many unique usages that differ from current writing norms. To preserve the original form and richness of Eileen Chang's prose, this book makes no changes unless there are obvious errors or omissions. This is specially noted.
