Does cirrhosis cause cancer?

Patient's question:

My friend's mother has cirrhosis. My friend recently found a girlfriend, and they have a good relationship. The girl's family also likes this young man very much. Later, it was said that the girl's family learned my friend's mother has cirrhosis, so they ignored him, fearing he might get cancer from it. I want to ask if cirrhosis can cause cancer.

Doctor's answer:

According to clinical diagnosis summaries, approximately 50%-90% of primary liver cancer patients have cirrhosis. Pathological examination reveals that most liver cancer with cirrhosis is post-hepatitis B macronodular cirrhosis. Cirrhosis is the progressive destruction of liver structure. After liver cells die, normal liver tissue undergoes "collapse," and the body replaces the collapsed areas with a large amount of fibrosis. If liver cells continue to inflame and the liver constantly regenerates fibrosis, it forms regenerative nodules. These fibers replace most of the liver tissue, but they lack the function of normal liver cells. The liver becomes hard and small, which constitutes cirrhosis.
