Features: When Zhou Wen appeared at the 19th Route Army's position on Qingyun Road with a large backpack, he was immediately spotted and detained by the guards.
The highest-ranking officer of the guards saw a civilian being brought forward and was greatly surprised. He grabbed Zhou Wen and pulled him into the trench, demanding angrily, "Who are you? How did you get here!"
Zhou Wen, also in a bad mood, took out a flag from his pocket, written with "Dongwu University Shanghai Battlefront Comforting Team," unfurled it, and handed it to the officer.
Yesterday at the 19th Route Army reception desk in Zhenru, the military supply officer in charge had told me that the fiercest fighting on the Shanghai front was happening at Qingyun Road and Caojia Bridge. But the position in front of me didn’t seem like a place of "intense" fighting at all—it didn’t even have gunshots!
I wonder if Liu Yuanguo’s position at Caojia Bridge is the same?
The officer snatched the flag, didn’t even look at it, and threw it aside, saying, "Ask me, how did you get onto the battlefield?"
The soldier who had captured Zhou Wen quickly interjected, "Captain Chen, he says he’s a student from Dongwu University in Suzhou with the comforting team and claims to be delivering comfort supplies to the front line!"
Captain Chen roared, "Nonsense! This is a battlefield, not a place for children! Go back immediately!"
Zhou Wen ignored him and took off his large backpack, opened it, and took out cigarettes and bags of candy one by one. Then he stood up and said, "Captain Chen, I don’t have any other intention except to give some comfort supplies to the soldiers fighting against Japan and express my support."
Captain Chen and the soldiers beside him immediately froze when they saw the cigarettes on the ground.
The guys in logistics didn’t know what they were doing—here they were, delivering supplies during a lull in the fighting, but only with ammunition and dry food, unaware that what everyone needed right now was something to stay awake and energized!
In their eyes, Zhou Wen suddenly became much more likable.
Captain Chen chewed his lips and said, "Young man, what’s your name? Where are you from?"
Zhou Wen didn’t answer and just picked up the flag that the officer had just thrown on the ground, unfurled it defiantly, and spread it over the cigarettes and candy.
Seeing Zhou Wen’s displeased expression, Captain Chen suppressed his laughter and said, "Hey, you’re angry already? What’s your name? Where are you from?"
Zhou Wen replied calmly, "My name is Zhou Wen, a student from Dongwu University in Suzhou. Yesterday, I delivered some comfort supplies to your reception desk in Zhenru. I heard that the fighting here has been intense recently, so I came today to bring some cigarettes and candy for the soldiers at the front."
Zhou Wen emphasized the word "intense" deliberately. He felt cheated and was angry, so his words naturally had a sharp edge!
Captain Chen laughed heartily and said, "This student is quite amusing. Why not stay quietly at your school in Suzhou? Why did you come to this battlefield? It’s a place where people can die at any moment—you might just run into it!"
Zhou Wen said seriously, "When a nation faces danger, every man has a responsibility! Although I, Zhou Wen, am just an ordinary scholar with no fighting skills, my patriotic heart is no less than anyone else’s! Although I can’t carry a gun to defend the country, I believe it’s my duty to cheer for the soldiers at the front and even shed blood for the nation!"
After hearing Zhou Wen’s words, Captain Chen immediately dropped his disdain and no longer had any disdainful expression on his face.
Yes, his position hadn’t even been visited by a comforting team, let alone the logistics troops. This young man had brought only a little comfort, but just for his sincerity, he couldn’t be treated carelessly.
Captain Chen immediately said, "I’m sorry, young man. I originally thought you came to our company’s position to imitate those who want to get famous by hanging around the battlefield. If I offended you earlier, don’t take it to heart."
Zhou Wen quickly said, "Captain Chen, you’re overthinking it. I, Zhou Wen, am not such a petty person. I truly admire soldiers like you who actively fight against Japan with patriotism!"
Captain Chen scratched his head and chuckled.
To say that what this university student said was really to his liking!
Suddenly, a sound of "whoosh, whoosh" came from the sky. Zhou Wen was immediately knocked down to the ground by the nearby Captain Chen, who shouted loudly beside him, "Little Japanese are shelling! Hide!"
The soldiers around quickly lay down in the trenches.
Just as they hid, Japanese shells landed and exploded.
After a few explosions, there was no more movement. Captain Chen got up from the ground, brushed the dirt off his clothes, cursed something, and then began to check the comfort supplies Zhou Wen had brought to see if they were damaged.
Fortunately, this shelling was just a few mortar shells, and the impact points were scattered, so the cigarettes and candy in the bag were intact.
Captain Chen relaxed and then loudly called, "Er Dan!"
A soldier immediately replied, "Here!" and hurried over with a low bow.
Captain Chen pointed to the cigarettes and candy on the ground and said, "Leave one pack of cigarettes, divide the rest into four parts, give one part to each company, and give another part to the artillery men behind."
Er Dan hesitated for a moment and said, "Captain, don’t you want to keep some for yourself?"
Captain Chen cursed, "Keep a damn pack? When you distribute the supplies, tell the company commanders that each soldier gets one cigarette and one piece of candy. The soldiers get it first, and any leftovers go to the officers! This pack of cigarettes is also for the guards and the staff!"
