History of Ancient Chinese Linguistics (Revised and Expanded Edition)

Author: He Jiuying

Publish Date: 2006-06-01
Features: From 1982 to 1992, over a decade, the author wrote two histories of Chinese linguistics, one on ancient China and the other on modern China. Among the main experiences, there are five. First, separate ancient and modern, making them independent chapters. Second, tightly integrate modernity with national identity, rather than opposing the two, which is the author's consistently upheld theoretical principle. Third, view history as a living process of life, rather than a dusty pile of dead archives. Writing the history of scholarship is, in fact, a dialogue with ancient scholars. We dialogue with Xunzi, with Yang Xiong, with Yan Zhitui, with Jiang Yong, with Qian Daisheng, because they still live in history. The works of the ancients are where their bloodline, spirit, and soul reside. Fourth, faithfully convey the meaning of the original texts while providing empathetic understanding. Fifth, honestly acknowledge the research achievements of predecessors and contemporaries, which is an excellent tradition in the history of Chinese scholarship.
